Citrix XenApp: Difference between Published “Installed Application” and published “Server Desktop”

Primarily, a published “Server desktop” runs Windows Explorer Shell layer between applications & Citrix shell, whereas a “published application” just runs under Citrix shell itself. Thus, certain applications exhibit better performance under server desktop session as they work in native Windows shell.

Scenario: By default all the application provide Print option which comes integrated with Windows option “Find Printer” that in turn gives ability for the user to search for all the network printers as well as Printers in “Active Directory”. CTX128322 – Windows 2008 R2 Server Becomes Unresponsive, Preventing RDP and ICA Connections, Requiring a Reboot – Citrix Knowledge Center

Symptoms Under certain circumstances a Windows Server 2008 R2 based server running XenApp 6 becomes unresponsive after some time. After users disconnect or end their session, all current user sessions stop responding and no new RDP or ICA Sessions can be started to the server. If the server is rebooted, this behaviour is resolved for an unspecified time, the issue might reoccur.
