GoToMeeting vs. GoToWebinar Application Packaging Analysis

Applications Usability:

GoToMeeting and GoToWebinar both are collaboration products from Citrix online.  These work in the same fashion except with the difference that GoToWebinar is used for a quite larger audience with pre-schedule and post reporting, whereas GoToMeeting is used for smaller audience usually for shorter duration with little pre-planning and post reporting requirements. 

 

Application Analysis:

Both the products are from Citrix Online and they need GoToMeeting client to installed and running on the system. If user, who doesn’t have GoToMeeting client and/or running the older versions, try to access the GoToMeeting invitation link they page will auto-detect the GoToMeeting and will prompt for the user to download and run the GoToMeeting client.

 

  1. GoToMeeting products get installed in folder
    1. C:Program Files (x86)CitrixGoToMeeting
  2. There is no separate installation folder for GoToWebinar, GoToWebinar runs with the same executable of GoToMeeting except that it uses different command line arguments as appropriate. 
  3. Multiple version of GoToMeeting can co-exist on a system:
    1. C:Program Files (x86)CitrixGoToMeeting<BuildNumber>
  4. GoToMeeting invokes with command line arguments:
    1. "C:Program Files (x86)CitrixGoToMeeting970g2mstart.exe" "/Action Host" "/Trigger Shortcut" "/Product G2M"
  5. GoToMeeting invokes with command line arguments:
    1. "C:Program Files (x86)CitrixGoToMeeting970g2mstart.exe" "/Action Host" "/Trigger Shortcut" "/Product G2W"
  6. When user with license access to both GoToMeeting and GoToWebinar logs on to GoToMeeting, the systray icon menu shows up both the products and their options, otherwise only respective product options will be shown

  7. When you say ‘Schedule a Meeting’, GoToMeeting directly presents you the Schedule Meeting window to go on
  8. But when you say ‘Schedule a Webinar’, it will launches browser with login to your GoToMeeting site
  9. If you have GoToWebinar access along with GoToMeeting, you’ll see both the options in the page as belowimage
  10. If you are running an older version of GoToMeeting (and thus GoToWebinar as well), you’ll be taken to the respective version GoToWebinar components download page, a sample page is below

  11. It’s possible that though GoToMeeting running latest version on the system, a GoToWebinar page will still prompt you for software download and installs previous version of the GoToMeeting.  This happens if there is a higher version of latest GoToMeeting than the latest GoToWebinar.  Thus GoToWebinar installs the previous version of GoToMeeting in which it’s latest binaries are included
