CTX130158 – Case Study: IMA Service not Starting in Farm with Recently Migrated SQL Datastore – Citrix Knowledge Center

Problem Definition

A customer reported that the IMA service was taking 10 minutes to start on the server. Users cannot logon to applications any more. Changes to the farm were applied with a delay.

Environment

  • The customer had a Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 Farm with Hotfix Rollup Pack 5.
  • The farm contains over 100 servers.
  • The operating system used was Windows Server 2003, 32-bit.
  • The customer restarted the Zone Data Collector (ZDC) during the process to upgrade to Hotfix Rollup Pack 6.
  • The SQL datastore was migrated from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 R2 two weeks ago.

Troubleshooting Methodology

The IMA service was very slow to restart on other member servers as well. The “Currently loading plugin” is Mfsrvss.dll.

A CDF trace on “All IMA” modules was captured when the IMA service was restarting.

In the meantime the IMA service startup time had increased to 25 minutes.

The analysis of the CDF trace pointed to a disk usage problem with the Transaction Log on the SQL Server.

Resolution

When the SQL Server was set up, the disk space chosen was too small for the farm size. To resolve the issue, refer to the Microsoft article Recover from a full transaction log in a SQL Server database.
