Administering Terminal Services

Terminal services is a Windows server role that needs to be installed via Server Manager tool.

This role installs below TS management components:

  1. TS Licensing Manager (LicMgr.exe)
  2. TS RemoteApp Manager (remoteprograms.msc)
  3. Terminal Services Manager (tsadmin.msc) – can be installed without TS role as well
  4. Terminal Services Configuration (tsconfig.msc) – can be installed without TS role as well

The executable’s are located in “C:WindowsSystem32” and their command line is as below:

mmc.exe     "C:Windowssystem32mmc.exe" "C:WindowsSystem32remoteprograms.msc"  TS RemoteApp Manager
mmc.exe     "C:Windowssystem32mmc.exe" "C:WindowsSystem32tsadmin.msc"     Terminal Services Manager
LicMgr.exe  "C:WindowsSystem32LicMgr.exe"    TS Licensing Manager

Brief about the TS Management Tools:

  1. TS Licensing Manager  -  Wizard to apply the TS license
  2. TS RemoteApp Manager – Manage TS RemoteApp’s
  3. Terminal Services Manager – Manage active user TS sessions
  4. Terminal Services Configuration – Configuring TS server to be used and User License Type, etc

Using TS Management Tools:

  • Terminal Services Configuration tool on server that is not running TS role, reports “Terminal Services Licensing mode” as “Remote Desktop for Administration”imageimage
  • On server running the TS role, it provides the proper Licensing mode and licensing server detailsimageimage
