Repackaging SilverLight: install instructions and behavior

When SilverLight is in-use

  • In both IE and FFox, users will receive below prompt for every page load that requires latest version Silverlight

Please restart your browser

This web page requires a newer version of Silverlight. You have already installed the required version of Silverlight, but have not restarted your browser to complete the upgrade process. Some content on this page may not be available until you restart your browser. 

  • Existing previous version dependent SilverLight pages load fines 
  • When you try to load Silverlight based pages in 64bit IE win7 64bit, you’ll see below message as yet there is no 64bit version Silverlight released

This Web browser or operating system may not be compatible with
Silverlight. Please review the system requirements and, if you wish to
proceed, choose the link for your operating system.

  • When there is a newer version Silverlight is available, you’ll see below notification while loading Silverlight based pages

        An earlier version of Silverlight has been detected.
        Installed version: Silverlight 3 (3.0.50106.0)
        Current version: Silverlight 4 (4.0.50524.0)

You may need to restart your browser.

Installation Instructions

  1. Verify your system requirements

    Make sure you are running a Silverlight-compatible Windows operating system and browser and that you have uninstalled any previous version of Silverlight.

  2. Download Silverlight

    For Windows Internet Explorer users:

    The browser will prompt you to either run or save the installation file (Silverlight.exe). Click Run to start the download. When the download is finished, the browser prompts you again to run the installer. Click Run to start the installation. Note that you must have sufficient administrative privileges to install Silverlight.

    For Mozilla Firefox users:

    Save Silverlight.exe to your hard disk. Once the download is finished, click Open. The installation starts.

  3. Install Silverlight

    If you are running the Windows Vista operating system, you will be prompted for security permissions. To continue, you need to approve.

    Click ‘Install now’ after reviewing the license agreement and privacy statement.

    If you have had a previous version of Silverlight installed, or are using Mozilla Firefox, you will need to restart your browser.

    You can now use Silverlight.

  4. Verify

    Verify your installation by experiencing the Silverlight site.

Note: If you do not see any of the above installed on your computer, then you have not installed a previous version of Silverlight, or you have already successfully uninstalled it. You can install the latest version of Silverlight.
