How do ActiveX and COM differ?

The Component Object Model (COM) is a binary specification that defines how objects can interact. An ActiveX object is a COM object. The major feature that characterizes ActiveX objects is their ability to be used from scripting languages. Doing so is often called ‘automation’. ActiveX objects use a COM interface named IDispatch which allows the script engine to resolve and call methods in the object at runtime. This is often called ‘late binding.’
