How to file Income Tax Returns online (e-filing) for the first time users

Things you should have before starting e-filing process:

  • A valid Form 16 for the year to which you want to file IT Returns. You should be filing the details in online form ONLY based on Form 16
  • A valid email address for registration on which you’ll receive the respective acknowledgements
  • Your bank account number along with branch MICR code, to which any Refund amount will be credited. You can find any banks MICR code here   image

User Registration and Software Download:

  • Register yourself with Income Tax Department Online e-filing portal here using your PAN number as username
  • Once successfully registered, login to the Portal here
  • Under Download section, click on respective year for which you want to file IT retrunsimage
  • If you are individual, go and download the  ITR-1 (SAHAJ)  “Return Preparation Software” available in the form “Excel Utility”image
  • The downloaded file will be named as ITR1_2012_13_R2 (for year 2012-2013) in ZIP format, extract the zip files and start the excel file in it

Getting IT Returns Preparation Software Excel Utility Ready:

  • This excel file will have Macros included and thus need enabling Macros in Excel. Depending on your Excel version you can have it enabled as appropriately.
  • For example, in case of Excel 2010, you’ll see a prompt like below image
  • You need to click on “Enable Content”, upon successfully enabling Macros, you’ll a prompt as below                                                                                                                    image

About IT Returns Preparation Software Excel Utility:

  • The Excel Utility contains below #5 sheets:
    1. Income Details
    2. TDS
    3. Taxes paid and Verification
    4. 80G
    5. Instructions (this sheet will appear only after you click Help button in any of the above sheets)
  • The Cells in light yellow color, will be auto populated with values when you click on “Calculate Tax” button on the topimage

Filing IT Returns Preparation Software Excel Utility:

  • Entering Particulars about the candidate:
Particular Details about Value to be filled in
Name: As per Form 16
Flat / Door / Building As per Form 16, your current address if it’s changed
Road / Street As per Form 16, your current address if it’s changed
Area / Locality As per Form 16, your current address if it’s changed
Town/City/District As per Form 16, your current address if it’s changed
State As per Form 16, your current address if it’s changed
Pin Code As per Form 16, your current address if it’s changed
PAN: As per Form 16
Status: “I-Individual” As per Form 16
Date of birth (DD/MM/YYYY) As per any official record, like our SSC memo
Sex (Select) As per any official record, like our SSC memo
Email Address Any of your valid email address
Mobile no Your valid Mobile number
(Std code) Phone No Your valid landline number
Employer Category (if in employment) Choose OTH, if your company doesn’t fall under PSU or GOV
Income Tax Ward / Circle You can verify your IT jurisdiction by entering your PAN here, NewLink
Return filed under section For employees who pay TDS, it should be 11-BeforeDueDt 139(4), if not choose the appropriate value from the drop down list
Whether original or revised return? For first time submissions it should be Original, Revised otherwise
Residential Status RES – Resident, or choose other appropriate value from dropdown list
Tax Status Nil Tax Balance, if your Form 16 shows no tax payable

  • Enter the Financials details as per your Form 16.
Particular Details about Value to be filled in
Income from Salary / Pension (Ensure to fill Sch TDS1) This is the amount of your salary after deductions of Hra, Medial etc, As per Form 16. See screenshot below
Deductions under Chapter VI A (Section) Enter the values against each section deduction as per your Form 16
Deductions (Total of 5a to 5m) Will be auto populated
Total Income (4 – 6) Will be auto populated
Tax payable on Total Income Will be auto calculated, when you click “Calculate tax”
Education Cess, including secondary and higher secondary cess on 8 Will be auto calculated, when you click “Calculate tax”
Total Tax, Surcharge and Education Cess (Payable) (8 + 9) Will be auto populated
Balance Tax Payable (10 – 11 – 12) Will be auto populated
Total Interest u/s 234A 234B 234C Will be auto calculated, when you click “Calculate tax”, this value should be 0 indicating that you don’t have to pay any further taxes
Total Tax and Interest Payable (13 + 14) Will be auto populated

Filling the Next Sheet TDS;

23. “Details of Tax Deducted at Source from SALARY [As per FORM 16 issued by Employer(s)]”

24    “Details of Tax Deducted at Source on Income OTHER THAN SALARY [As per FORM 16 A issued by Deductor(s)]”

25    Details of Advance Tax and Self Assessment Tax Payments

Note: If you enter the (23) section about TDS, you don’t have to fill in the 25th section as that will lead to twice consideration of the same tax under both Advance Tax as well as TDS.

You can cross verify this calculation in the next sheet “Taxes paid and Verification”

Filling the Next Sheet “Taxes paid and Verification”;

  • All of the financial numbers will be auto populated here.
  • You need to pay attention that these figures are in-tact matching with your Form 16
  • Particularly, there should not be any Tax Payable if you have already paid taxes in terms of TDS.
  • Provide your Bank account details if there is any Tax refund to be done for you.

Enter into “80G” sheet if you have made any donations that needs to be excluded from taxing, otherwise you can leave it all empty as if its untouched

Then run Validate button on all of the sheets and ensure that all sheets are reported as OK

Then click “Generate” button from first sheet named “Income Details”.

That will generate the XML file in a new Sheet and you’ll be presented with the named “Save XML File” when you click on the save button you’ll have an .XML file

“……ITR1_2012_13_R2ITR1_PANNUMBERHERE.xml”

You’ll use Save XML button only after generate button presents you save option without any errors/prompts

Submitting the IT Returns E-File:

  • Once you have successfully generated the XML file, you need to login to the portal
  • Click on appropriate “Assessment Year” under SUBMIT RETURN section image
  • In the next page, Select “Form Name” as ITR-I and then click nextimage
  • In the next page, click browse button and choose the XML file that you generated and then click Uploadimage
  • Upon successful upload you’ll receive a confirmation page like belowimage
  • You can download the acknowledge in PDF file. It’s password protected and it’s password would <PANNUMBER><DOBddmmyy>
  • Print out the Acknowledgement, sign on the document and sent it to the “Income Tax Department – CPC, Post Bag No – 1, Electronic City Post Office, Bengaluru – 560100, Karnataka, ” BY ORDINARY POST OR SPEED POST ONLY within 120 days of transmitting the data electronically.

 

From uploading for 2013-2014 Online:

Upload Return

Your Return has been successfully uploaded and the Transaction ID is: xxxxxxxxxx. In case of any queries, please contact 1800 4250 0025.

 

An e-mail confirming the successful submission of your Return along with the Acknowledgment number and ITR-V has been sent to [email protected] .

 

Click Here to download ITR-V

 

Please send the verified and signed ITR-V to the Income-Tax Department by ordinary post OR speed post ONLY within a period of 120 days from the date of transmitting the data electronically.
