Many Diploma students wonder about the engineering courses offered in distance mode are approved by the Govt. Of India and about their eligibility for employment.
With respect of courses from AMIE and AMIETE that are being in place from a long while, is that they are NOT approved by either DEC or AICTE. However, they can still be applicable for applying to Government posts as they are recognized by Union Public Service Commission who acts as the recruiter/employer for Central Govt. Jobs.
Government of India, as an employer, had clarified its position with regard to the recognition of the qualifications earned through distance mode vide Gazette Notification No. 44 dated 1st March 1995 which inter-alia, states that only such qualifications earned through distance mode, which are approved by DEC and wherever necessary, by AICTE, are recognized for the purpose of employment under Central Government.
Its AICTE policy that the programmes, conducted through distance mode, leading to MBA and MCA degrees shall only be recognized by AICTE. That means ONLY Master courses are approved and if it’s an integrated masters program you may even earn the bachelors in the same course.
To be explicit, B.Tech. degrees acquired through distance education, from any University/Deemed University, are NOT approved by AICTE
Even DISTANCE EDUCATION COUNCIL (- IGNOU – INDIRA GANDHI NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY) is NOT recognizing the Engineering courses in Distance mode in recent approvals.
The DEC-IGNOU, had approved below engineering courses in distance previously which aren’t yet re-assured of the approval applicability:
Andhra University, Vishakhapatnam (From: 1995 To: 2007-08)
B. Tech. (Chemical Engineering) BE in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Electronics & Communications EngineeringJawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad (From: 1995 To: 2007-08)
B. Tech. in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science & EngineeringAcharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur (From: 1995 To: 2007-08)
B. Tech. – Civil, Mechanical, EEE, EC, Computer Science, Information Technology
- It’s now almost absolute that there are NO Engineering course in distance mode from any university with approval from Distance Education Council.
However, IGNOU, by itself started a new distance education programmes in engineered under the name of Vertically Integrated Engineering Programme (VIEP – www.ignouviep.org). Need to check about it further.

The information on AMIE is misleading in this report.
Please visit http://www.ieindia.info/RECOGNITION.aspx to get a clear idea about recognisation. DEC and AICTE both confirmed that recognition of AMIE does not come under their scope.
AICTE says…The equivalence of AMIE is approved by Board of Assessment, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India, and by The Association of Indian Universities for employment and academic equivalence……….
DEC says ….Recognition of passing Sections A & B Examinations does not come under the purview of Distance Education Council.
Moreover AMIE exam is reconised by prestigious NARIC, UK, Evaluation World LLC., Credential Evaluation Service, USA , and in Australia which enables AMIE degree holder to live and work in allmost all part of the world and including eligible to get admission in PG programme.
Hey Asim Sarkar,
Exactly that’s the problem. AMIE recognization doesn’t fall under their scope. But some of Govt, Public and private sectors industries invites applicants to have AICTE/DEC approved degree in case of distance engineering degree. Particularly in case of state government posts this becomes an issue. That’s what the whole trouble for AMIE aspirants.
